Platinum Group Metal Loses
The figures quoted are taken from literature and experience and are an average of gross losses from the catalyst gauze per tonne of acid produced prior to catchment or filtration recoveries. Low pressure or atmospheric plants 0.055g per tonne acid Medium pressure plants 0.140g per tonne acid High pressure plants 0.280g per tonne acid
Gross Loss Calculation Example – Medium Pressure Plant
Gross loss calculation example -Medium pressure plant 600 tonnes acid per day production; plant runs 330 days per year; age 15 years; gross loss 0.15g pgm per tonne acid; catchment installed operating at 70% efficiency. Therefore net loss - 0.045g pgm per tonne acid produced. Total loss of pgm (600 x 330 x 15 x 0.045) – 133,650g Pt + trace Rh. Loss of Palladium from catchment would be similar to Pt loss, i.e. 133,650g. This would give a total loss of pgm of 267,300g
Chemical Recovery Process
The processes use a mixture of chemicals that gently remove any base metal oxide plus pgm
oxide from metal surfaces within a plant without detrimental effects on the components treated.
